Le cowboy, le clown et le torero (2012)

Ethnographic documentary

Direction : Frédéric Saumade, Jean-Baptiste Maudet
Production : IDEMEC (ANR project Torobullmexamerica)
Length : 38 minutes
Language : French

The rodeo clown bullfighter, whose usual job consists in saving the cowboy bull rider from the fury of the bucking bull in the arena, is at the same time a comic and a tragic character : he is working on the limit between life and death. His paradoxical denomination and appearance evoke on a parodic way a Hispanic past that was once repressed by the US Conquest of the West, along with the Indian cultures. Shot in California from 2009 and 2011, this documentary shows the clown bullfighter as a principle of alteration within rodeo’s patriotic celebration that opens the way to different kind of arena games, between rodeo to bullfighting, involving communities as different as White, Indian and Black cowboys, Mexicans, Portuguese Americans and even Gay people.

This documentary has been produced by the Torobullmexamerica project (ANR-08-BLAN-0019) funded by the Agence nationale de la recherche (National Agency for Research, France).
