Ethnographic documentary

Direction : Manoël Pénicaud
Production : Mucem / Idemec
Length : 3 minutes 22

Abstract (French) :

Born in Rome in 1954, this Italian Jesuit has dedicated his life to understanding Islam, following in the footsteps of Louis Massignon. He declared himself to be ‘ in love with Islam and a believer in Jesus’, thereby asserting the Abrahamic union and transcending the boundaries of dogma. Expelled from Syria in June 2012, he returned there clandestinely in July 2013. He went to the headquarters of the self-proclaimed ‘califate’ of the ‘Islamic State’ (Daesh) to obtain the release of Muslim hostages by offering himself as a ‘ voluntary hostage’. To date, he has not re-emerged.

This interview has been made in Marseille (France) in 2013.

This documentary has been made for the exhibition Lieux saints partagés at the Musée des civilisations de l’Europe et de la Méditerranée (Mucem) in Marseille, april-august 2015.
