The Institut d’ethnologie méditerranéenne, européenne et comparative (IDEMEC ; Institute of mediterranean, european and comparative ethnology) is a joint research unit involving the Aix-Marseille University (AMU) and the Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS ; National Center for scientific Research). It is linked to the Department of Anthropology of the AMU and to the Institut des sciences humaines et sociales (Institute of Humanities) of the CNRS. The IDEMEC is located in the building of the Maison méditerranéenne des sciences de l’Homme (MMSH; Mediterranean House of Humanities) in Aix-en-Provence (France).
The IDEMEC conducts comparative research in European, Mediterranean and Middle Eastern areas. In each one of these areas, especially in each Mediterranean and Middle East “regions” (from Iran to Morocco via the Balkans and Italy), the laboratory gathers experts and original documentation. It maintains relationships with several organizations (Abroad french research institutes, universities, museums, ...) in each country where its members work. It is associated with the new Musée des civilisations de l’Europe et de la Méditerranée (Museum of European and Mediterranean civilizations; MUCEM) in Marseille.
The IDEMEC gives a large importance to the quality of empirical research and its comparative dimension. It feeds a continuous reflection, during his seminars and workshops, on methods and anthropological concepts, especially
when they are applied to contemporary western world, a field in which our researchers are leaders since a long time.
Teachers and researchers of the IDEMECare actively involved in research training. They provide various courses for MA/BA students in the Department of Anthropology of Aix-Marseille University and supervise PhD students of the laboratory in their works.
